Is Astrology a Sin?

Is Astrology a Sin?

Have you ever wondered if astrology is a sin, or in conflict with your religious beliefs?

Is Astrology a Sin?

As someone from a Christian / Catholic background, I was occasionally warned in the past about dabbling in metaphysical subjects like astrology.

I analyze almost everything (as a Virgo…), and astrology was no exception.

In my teenage years, I would have quelled my curiosity if I felt that the study of astrology was:

  • Harmful to myself
  • Harmful to others
  • More about fluff/entertainment/hype
  • A form of black magic that involves invoking Satanic forces
  • Based on superstition

Sin suggests some level of guilt and/or repentance, and I’ve never been one to feel guilty about things I’m genuinely passionate about.

That being said, it wasn’t until my 18th birthday that I dove into the world of astrology beyond the sun sign. I remember reading a website with a general overview of the planets in different signs. There were descriptions for signs in Virgo, which is what I read at first. I didn’t realize yet that each of us has a unique birth chart based on our birth time and birth location.

As I read the different descriptions, I thought to myself: “Hmm…I guess I feel like a Virgo Sun a lot of the time, but a Venus in Virgo doesn’t sound like me at all.” I felt like certain descriptions resonated with me more than others, such as Pisces, Scorpio and Libra.

Shortly after, I realized it was because I DID have planets in these signs — Moon, Venus, and Mercury respectively. No wonder I didn’t feel like a Virgo Sun 100% of the time!

As a result, that was the “catalyst” which made me more proactive. I decided to invest the time to study and explore how astrology can be used positively as a tool for self-analysis and personal growth. How is learning more about yourself an activity that is categorized as a sin?

This approach makes it compatible for people from all walks of life, whether or not you identify with a mainstream religion.

I bought several books on the subject. Consequently, I paid less attention to the popular “Sun Sign” horoscopes found in tabloids, celebrity gossip magazines, newspapers and some websites. The readings weren’t accurate to me as we are so much more than just our sun signs.

Astrology can be viewed as fortune telling, depending on your point of view (that’s my Libra Mercury at work).

According to Google, a fortune teller is someone who:

“predicts a person’s future by palmistry, using a crystal ball, or similar methods.”

Some people say that predictive astrology (the forecasting of future events and developments) is equivalent to fortune-telling.

At face value, that can be true.

I prefer to view astrology as a less fatalistic subject, because I firmly believe that we each have a choice as to how to live our lives or respond to events. Even a tiny modicum of free will puts you in charge of how you steer your life.

A wise feng shui expert once told me to use Eastern or Western astrology for “a bit of help,” but not to the extent where it “controlled my life.”

Because a chart is so layered and complex — particularly when you factor in the natal / progressed chart and transits — I enjoy viewing a chart as a “compass.” It tells a story about someone’s personality, and how the personality has evolved over time. You can prepare yourself for challenging transits (such as during a first Saturn return) by being aware of those challenging aspects through studying your chart.

Instead of viewing this as “mystical” or “occult fortune-telling,” I think it’s healthy to approach it as being adaptable to changes in life and being prepared for future growth.

When we integrate different parts of our personality into our consciousness, it helps us live our full potential as human beings. After all, that’s one of the biggest contributions anybody can make to their community and to society on a broader scale.

Over the course of my life, I’ve thought about astrology being a combination of the following:

  • An art and a science (the art involves the intuitive portion of interpreting a chart; the science involves observing / recording the actual planetary movements)
  • Belief system
  • Language (i.e. structure and communication between the universe and ourselves)
  • Something practical
  • Something spiritual

It means different things to different people. In addition, it is always enjoyable to hear about what astrology means to someone when they have a deep appreciation for it.

What I like about astrology is its neutral quality — somewhat akin to gravity or the law of attraction which simply exist. Astrology is the study of the effects of planetary movements on our lives on Earth. As long as there are stars and planets in the sky, these effects are going to be reflected. Therefore this information on its own is neither “good” nor “evil.”

A technical description of astrology by

“Astrology is the study of the correlation between the positions and movements of celestial bodies and life and physical processes on Earth, and their resulting practices.”

Another short and elegant description of astrology via Cafe Astrology:

“Astrology is valuable in helping us form realistic expectations and a clear perspective. The beauty of astrology is that it will help you to always be in complete control of your life.”

Here are some quotes which echo my sentiments on a key Bible fact:

1) “Being Christian should never affect one’s study of astrology. Remember, there is a special place in God’s heart of the good astrologer. It was the 3 [wise men] who followed the Star over Bethlehem who financed the Holy Family’s escape from Herod into Egypt.” (~ Lynn Koiner)

2) Several translations refer to the men outright as astrologers at Matthew Chapter 2, such as the Phillips News Testament (1972). The wise men went to pay Jesus homage after “observing his star at its rising.”
(~ Wikipedia)

3) “It was years later when I realized that the three wise men were astrologers. This information brought me peace as I began my astrological counseling journey. Many Christian clients of mine even tell me that they feel more connected to God after an astrological consultation. They feel that they are not alone and that there is a purpose in their life.” (~ Carmen Turner-Schott)

To wrap up this post, a sin is defined as:

“any reprehensible or regrettable action, behavior, lapse, etc.; great fault or offense.”

As a teen, I felt that I’d be complicating matters by being paralyzed with fear as to whether astrology is sinful or against religious beliefs.

Wasting time by doing unproductive things. Or doing nothing about having no direction in life. These were always a bigger “sin” to my inner self, versus learning more about myself.

I highly doubt that God / the universe would have a massive problem with that.

Astrology Quotes

Quotes by astrologers and other individuals on the wisdom of astrology, why it works, and how it can enrich your life and soul.

I think it’s a splendid thing that so many intelligent and learned people throughout history have held the subject in such high regard. To me, that says more about the subject than skeptics’ comments (see quote #2 for a perspective on that matter).

This post will be a work-in-progress with updates. I’m starting off with astrology quotes in my first top 10 list 🙂

The moon sign in astrology is an important planet, as it shows your emotional nature, instinctive nature, and what your deep emotional needs are.

This is why you could feel like a very intense Gemini, if you had a Gemini Sun with Scorpio as your Moon sign.

Here’s a short description of each moon sign.

ARIES: Impulsive, enthusiastic, and impatient. Gets bored easily. Optimistic.

TAURUS: Deliberate, slow-paced, concerned with feeling a sense of security. Stable emotions and likes to have a comfortable environment.

GEMINI: Curious and witty nature. Sociable. Natural instinct is to think about emotions more than feel them.

CANCER: The Moon is in its rulership in the sign of Cancer, which is where it can express itself fully and easily.  Has a tendency to cling to their home, possessions, friends and family.

LEO: Emotional nature has a dramatic, generous and fun-loving temperament. Feels energized when natural spontaneity and exuberance can be creatively expressed.

VIRGO: Analytical nature when it comes to processing emotions. Practical, good memory, reserved, and wants to store or organize emotions so that feelings are expressed in a “correct” and suitable context.

LIBRA: Does not like to be alone. Needs to feel an intellectual rapport with a romantic partner. Can be indecisive. Needs calm and balance to feel secure, which is why relationships can be a very complicated territory (where it’s sometimes anything BUT calm and harmonious).

SCORPIO: Deeply emotional, very intense, mystical and secretive. Temperament is quiet, dark, and brooding.

SAGITTARIUS: Light-hearted, hates to feel tied down. Loves freedom and emotional adventures.

CAPRICORN: Patient, disciplined, high level of self-control. The emotional nature reflects the serious, disciplined Capricorn energy that is driven by long-term success.

AQUARIUS: Idealistic and cool-headed. Can deny “irrational” emotions —such as jealousy and fear because of their belief that they are better than such “base” human emotions. Expects a lot of breathing space in relationships. Needs friendship to feel secure. Can be stubborn and dogmatic about getting others to do things their way.

PISCES: Needs to feel “at one” with the world. There is a drive to transcend mundane reality and merge with something that goes beyond the physical, personal self. Needs to set emotional boundaries and have some quiet time to recharge.

P.S. Let us know in the comments section whether you feel more like your sun sign or moon sign (or both!).

Billionaires: Virgo Quotes

Billionaires: Virgo Quotes

Billionaires and astrology…is there any correlation?

I remembered reading a Forbes article a few years ago with the following sentence:

“At 12%, [Virgo is] the most common astrological sign among billionaires.”
— (2006)

Virgo Billionaires: Facts and Quotes. Based on study by Forbes.

[bctt tweet=”At 12%, Virgo is the most common astrological sign among billionaires. — @Forbes #astrology” username=”innerlifegoals”]

The article also mentions that Virgos are “happiest when they can produce things or services that are useful to others.”

While every Zodiac sign can found in the Forbes list, I thought it’d be interesting to compile some facts and quotes about the work ethic of the industrious Virgos on the list.

I may expand this post into a series featuring billionaires from other Zodiac signs, as every sign has their strengths which we can learn from. As an industrious Virgo myself, it’s probably something I’ll get started on if I write it on my to-do list…

Anyway for the purpose of this post, here is a list of 6 Virgo Billionaires, since Virgo is the 6th sign of the Zodiac.

I’m Reading: Rock Your Feminine Type, by Joy Balma.

Women in business would certainly appreciate this book! What I love about the content is how it explains one’s strengths and weaknesses. Later I’ll fill out a section of the questionnaire in order to gain more clarity on my ‘shadow’ type (i.e. weak points).

In the book, you’ll find out if you’re:

  • The Diva or The Sweetheart
  • The Excellence Girl or The Muse
  • The Seeker or The Saint
  • The Goddess Geek or The Success Girl

I’m Drinking: A very relaxing concoction of herbal tea and organic, raw honey.

QUESTION: What’s your favorite website builder?

ANSWER: I like using WordPress. I tried SquareSpace for a couple of weeks, but several components weren’t loading correctly when I viewed the website on a tablet. Initially, I thought SS would save me time and money because of the convenience of their prettily designed templates and drag-and-drop editor. Frank Swift has a detailed post on the agony involved with a platform that doesn’t work as it should.

I’d love to know your answers, so introduce yourself and leave a comment 🙂

Starting Over

Starting Over

Starting over was a subject on my mind since a couple of weeks ago, due to the solar and lunar eclipses in September 2016.

3 tips for starting your life over and dealing with changes.

I thought about times in my life where a lot of changes were happening, and narrowed it down to three tips which helped me in terms of navigating my life and aspirations.

The first step was overcoming a fear of change.

The second step was taking the time to get in touch with what I really wanted.

The third step was taking the challenges as an opportunity to re-focus and re-organize.

This led me to write an article so that others could learn about how to deal with change in a way that is both positive and constructive.

The full article is posted at SelfGrowth. Thank you to SG for the blog post contribution opportunity!
